2025, vinyl lettering on wall, 4852 cm (total length)
When you exit the south entrance of the Takamatsu Art Museum—a solid and beautiful building constructed from Aji stone, a type of granite from the Seto Inland Sea—and turn left, a narrow alley suddenly appears, barely wide enough for a single person to pass. It feels completely different from the museum: bookstore warehouses, tin roofs, ivy-covered walls, propane gas tanks, stray cats—an exciting, intimate space that feels oddly out of place.
We believe that art reveals its true potential when it emerges in unexpected places, and when it does not look like “art” at all. Inspired by this idea, we envisioned this alley as a path of contemplation—like a Philosopher’s Path.
Along the 50-meter outer wall of the museum that runs beside this alley, we affixed vinyl lettering of the third verse from the first chapter of the Sutta Nipāta, titled “Rhinoceros Horn”—a passage said to be the direct words of the Buddha in early Buddhism. This verse ends each stanza with the phrase: “Wander alone like a rhinoceros horn.” It urges the seeker to abandon all attachments and continue walking alone, toward enlightenment.
There is wholeness at the end of solitude.
We wonder if, after walking this narrow path while reading “Rhinoceros Horn,” the solitary walker might find that something in their view of the world has subtly shifted by the time they emerge on the other side of the museum.
